It was once the time when the stairs
were seen as simple connecting area between two floors. It is not because it is
considered as an area of passage that has to be bland. A long time ago I made a
post talking about how to hang frames on the walls of a staircase (here). However, it was
written just in Portuguese so I decided to update it and add the text in
English.
Your stairway can be a cold forgotten
corner of your home or it can be a personalized passage filled with light and
charm. The wall beside the stairs is a blank canvas that you can use to display
your favorite decorative items. Whether your tastes lean toward the traditional
or the eclectic, you can use your stairway to showcase your style (here). Pictures, family
photos, travel photos or even simple drawings help make these walls more
special.
However, the question is:
how to hang pictures along a stair and achieve a beautiful and elegant effect? You know it’s not easy to hang art frames
on a stair wall. Hanging art on stairway requires skill — the skills to understand its
inclining angle, changing viewable heights and many other things. So, in this blog post I’ll tell you some simple and straightforward ways
to hang wall frames and photos on a stairway (here).
There is no rule that must be followed
blindly to assemble a composition of pictures. The most important thing is to
give unity to the whole. In this post, we tell you some simple and
straightforward ways to hang wall frames on a stairway:
1) The Stepped Arrangement:
This is the most stylish arrangement among all art
display ideas. In this method, you just have to “copy the stair pattern” on your wall. There are no rules on how
many paintings you need. You can go with any number of paintings, provided they
don’t exceed the number of stairs. If you would like to hang equal number of
art (as the number of stairs), then you have to make sure the frames are at
least 2 to 3 inches (5 a 8 cm) shorter than stair breadths. Otherwise, there
won’t be enough breathing space between the frames (here).
Step 1– Measure the total wall length.
Step 2– Then divide the total length by number of
paintings. You will get a number (say “X”), which is the maximum available
space we can use for each frame.
Step 3– Now, we have to mark the horizontal reference
point for each frame. (See figure) These reference points later help us to
determine the centre point of each frame.
Here is how you find it: with this simple formula.Y= X
(n-0.5), where “n” is the number of frame and “Y” is the distance from the
left end of wall.
Say, if you are trying to find reference point of 3rd
frame, replace n with 3. So Y = 2.5 X. You need to measure this from the
left end of the wall (see figure). Similarly, you can find all other reference
points.
Step 4– In this step, we will find the exact centre
points of each frame. To get this, you need to measure through previously
marked reference points.
From the floor’s bottom, touching
individual reference points, calculate the centre points at 60” (150 cms)
height. These are the locations where you should hang your art for a
balanced look.
You should also remember that this
arrangement looks beautiful only if you use similar sized frames. If you have
different sized frames, you need to use next method (here).
2 – Follow the Stair Model:
In the previous arrangement, we saw we
need several frames for an outstanding look. Suppose, you don’t have that many
frames. What would you do?
Well, then you can employ this method.
It’s easier, and you can use this approach if you have different sized frames.
Let’s say, instead of 5 paintings in
above example, we only have 3 frames. One is a lanscape painting and other is a
bigger one. How could we arrange these frames? Here is how.
Step 1 –Find out the total length of the wall.
Step 2 – Mark the absolute center of wall.
Then, with this point as reference point, measure the centre point on the wall
at 60” (152 cm) from floor.
This is where we will hang our bigger frame.
Step 3 – Now, mark two equally distant points on
either side of this center point. Make sure, you have separated these reference
points adequately so that there is enough space to hang other two frames.
Step 4 – Now, with these as reference points,
find out the center points at 60” (152 cm) height. If your other two frames are
similar, you can hang them at these points. Otherwise, you have to make small
adjustments for a balanced look.
Step 5 – If the frames are of different sizes,
you may have to move these centre points sideways (towards center frame), to
equally space frames. (See figure)
By using this method, you can arrange
art on stairways with less number of frames or different sized frames (here).
3 Arrange in Groups:
If you have large walls or long
stairways, then it makes sense to use groups of frames for an elegant look. In
this arrangement, you could use either similar frames or different sized
frames. In this method, we will first put together groups of frames and then
arrange these groups over the staircase wall. For a balanced look, ensure all
frames in a group are equally spaced. When you hang groups of frames, you need
to treat the frames in a group as one big frame, and measure its length and
breadth. You also have to measure the center of the group. This centre should
align with the centre point we later mark on the walls (here).
Here I show you arrange in groups:
Step 1 – First, create the group in the way you
like. Measure its length and breadth.
Step 2 – Measure the total length of wall.
Step 3– Calculate how many groups you could hang on the wall. To
get this number, divide wall length by group’s breadth.
Please remember to add 2-4 inches (5 –
10 cm) to breadth while calculating this. Otherwise, there won’t be any
breathing space between groups.
Step 4– Divide length of wall with total number of groups. You
will get a length (say X), which will be the maximum available space for each
individual group.
Step 5 – Find out the reference points for each
group. To get this, use the same simple formula Y = X(n-0.5), where “X”
is the value we calculated in previous step. “n” is the number of group
(nth group) and “Y” is the distance from left end of wall.
Step 6– Here, we will mark the center points of each group. You
have to measure 60” (152
cm) from stair floor through each reference points to get these
points. Then, hang each group at these center points.
That’s it...!!! I know its lot steps, but if you follow the
steps outlined above, you will end up with a beautifully decorated staircase
wall that no one could resist !! (here).
However, if your case does not fit into
any of the above topics, that is, you are a person with a large number of frames
and/or photos and with different sizes, you can follow this other way to
organize your gallery:
4 - Personal Way:
Step 1 - Initially, select the frames and photos you want to hang.
With a tape measure the wall space
where you want to organize your frames and photos. The highest point of hanging
frames should be about 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm) above the average level of
eyes on each step (± 1,60 m or 630 "). This means that the highest point
of the frames will be a diagonal line parallel to the stair, increasing as you
climb the steps. The lowest point of the frames should be 15 to 30 cm (6 - 12
") below the average level of eyes on each step. This means that the
lowest point of the surface will be a diagonal line parallel to the top line
---- the space between the two lines will form a rectangle about 45 to 60 cm
(17-24 ") wide.
Another way would be to determine a
height of about ± 125 cm (47 ") to position the lower frame and repeat the
process on the other steps. In the vertical direction, choose a spacing of
about 8 to 15 cm (3 to 6 ") (here).
Step 2 - Create a similar space on the floor by stretching two pieces of thread
or rope to represent the top and bottom lines of the stairway wall (reproducing
the rectangle of the wall). Put the pictures on the floor between the two lines
and try different arrangements. Mix and match the frames keeping about 8 to 15
inches (8 to 6 inches) of space between them. If desired, you can cut out
boards with the same dimensions of the frames and attach them to the wall and
assemble your composition. Make different compositions and choose the one that
suits you best (here).
Step 3 - Transfer the first frame to the wall, starting at the center and near
the top of the wall. Hang the picture. Add frames to the left, right, and below
the first frame until you have filled the entire wall with the frames and the
photos. Go away and check everything to make sure the result pleases you.
Frames finally placed. Final effect, simple, harmonious and
elegant. Now it's your turn, let's get to work, create your composition, go
ahead without fear of making a mistake and your house will gain a new astral.

COMO PENDURAR QUADROS E FOTOS EM UMA ESCADARIA?
Já foi o tempo em que as escadas eram vistas como simples área de
ligação entre dois pisos. Não é por ser considerada como área de passagem que
tem de ser sem graça. Tempos atrás eu fiz uma postagem falando sobre como
pendurar quadros nas paredes de uma escadaria (aqui). Todavia, por estar
escrito apenas em português resolvi atualizá-lo e adicionar o texto em inglês.
Sua escada pode ser um canto frio e esquecido de sua casa ou pode ser
uma passagem personalizada cheia de luz e charme. A parede ao lado das escadas
é uma tela em branco que você pode usar para exibir seus itens decorativos
favoritos. Se os seus gostos se inclinam para o tradicional ou o eclético, você
pode usar sua escada para mostrar seu estilo (aqui). Quadros, fotos de
família, fotos de viagens ou mesmo simples desenhos, contribuem para deixar
essas paredes mais especiais.
Mas a questão é: como pendurar fotos ao longo de uma escada e conseguir
um efeito bonito e elegante? Você sabe que não é fácil pendurar quadros de arte
em uma parede de escada. Pendurar a arte na escada requer habilidade - as
habilidades para entender seu ângulo de inclinação, alterar alturas visíveis e
muitas outras coisas. Assim, nesta postagem, vou mostrar a vocês algumas
maneiras simples e diretas de pendurar quadros e fotos nas paredes de uma
escada (aqui).
Não há uma regra a ser seguida cegamente para montar uma composição de
fotos. O mais importante é dar unidade ao todo. Neste post, contamos algumas
maneiras simples e diretas de pendurar quadros nas paredes de uma escada:
1) O Arranjo Escalonado:
Este é o arranjo mais elegante entre todas as ideias de exibição de
arte. Nesse método, você só precisa “copiar
o padrão da escada” na sua parede. Não há regras sobre quantos quadros você
precisa. Você pode usar qualquer número de quadros, desde que eles não excedam
o número de degraus. Se você quiser pendurar um número igual de quadros (com o
número de degraus), então você deve garantir que os quadros estejam pelo menos
2 a 3 polegadas (5 a 8 cm) menores do que as larguras dos degraus. Caso
contrário, não haverá espaço suficiente para que os quadros possam respirar (aqui).
Passo 1 - Meça o comprimento total da parede.
Passo 2 – Em seguida, divida o comprimento total pelo número
de quadros. Você irá encontrar um número (digamos "X"), que é o
espaço máximo que podemos usar para cada quadro.
Passo 3 - Agora, temos que marcar o ponto de referência
horizontal para cada quadro. (Veja a figura). Esses pontos de referência mais
tarde n os ajudam a determinar o ponto central de cada quadro.
Aqui está como você o encontra: com esta fórmula simples. Y = X (n-0.5), onde “n”
é o número de quadros e “Y” é a distância da extremidade esquerda da parede.
Digamos que, se você estiver tentando encontrar o ponto de referência do
3º quadro, substitua n por 3. Então Y = 2,5 X. Você precisa medir isso da
extremidade esquerda da parede (veja a figura). Da mesma forma, você pode
encontrar todos os outros pontos de referência.
Passo 4– Nesta etapa, encontraremos os pontos centrais
exatos de cada quadro. Para obter isso, você precisa medir através de pontos de
referência marcados anteriormente.
A partir do piso, tocando nos pontos de referência individuais, calcule
os pontos centrais a uma altura de 60 ”(150 cm). Estes são os locais onde você
deve pendurar seu quadro para obter uma aparência equilibrada.
Você também deve lembrar que esse arranjo só é bonito se você usar
quadros de tamanhos semelhantes. Se você tem quadros de tamanhos diferentes,
você precisa usar o próximo método (aqui).
2 - Siga o Modelo da Escada:
No arranjo anterior, vimos que precisamos de vários quadros para uma
aparência excepcional. Suponha que você não tenha muitos quadros. O que você
faria?
Bem, então você pode empregar esse método. É mais fácil e você pode usar
essa abordagem se tiver quadros de tamanhos diferentes.
Digamos que, em vez de cinco quadros no exemplo acima, tenhamos apenas
três quadros. Uma é uma pintura de paisagem e outra é maior. Como poderíamos
organizar esses quadros? Aqui está como:
Passo 1 – Veja qual é o comprimento total da parede.
Passo 2 - Marque o centro absoluto da parede. Então, com
este ponto como ponto de referência, meça o ponto central na parede a 60 ” (152
cm) do chão. É aqui que vamos pendurar o quadro maior.
Passo 3 - Agora, marque dois pontos igualmente distantes em
ambos os lados deste ponto central. Certifique-se de ter separado esses pontos
de referência adequadamente para que haja espaço suficiente para pendurar os
outros dois quadros.
Passo 4 - Agora, com estes pontos de referência, descubra os
pontos centrais a uma altura de 60 ” (152 cm). Se os outros dois quadros forem
semelhantes, você pode pendurá-los nesses pontos. Caso contrário, você terá que
fazer pequenos ajustes para obter uma aparência balanceada.
Passo 5 - Se os quadros forem de tamanhos diferentes, você
pode ter que mover esses pontos centrais para os lados (através do quadro
central), para dividir igualmente os espaços entre os quadros. (Veja a figura)
Usando esse método, você pode organizar arte em escadas com menor número
de quadros ou com quadros de tamanhos diferentes (aqui).
3 Organize em Grupos:
Se você tem paredes grandes ou escadas longas, então faz sentido usar
grupos de quadros para obter uma aparência elegante. Nesse arranjo, você pode
usar quadros semelhantes ou quadros de tamanhos diferentes. Neste método, vou
primeiro montar grupos de quadros e depois organizar esses grupos sobre a
parede da escada. Para uma aparência balanceada, certifique-se de que todos os
quadros de um grupo estejam igualmente espaçados. Quando você pendura grupos de
quadros, você precisa tratar os quadros de tal forma que o grupo forme um
quadro grande e medir seu comprimento e largura. Você também tem que medir o
centro do grupo. Este centro deve estar alinhado com o ponto central que depois
iremos marcar nas paredes (aqui).
Aqui está como você organiza em grupos:
Passo 1 - Primeiro, crie o grupo da maneira que preferir.
Meça seu comprimento e largura.
Passo 2 - Meça o comprimento total da parede.
Passo 3 - Calcule quantos grupos você poderia pendurar na
parede. Para obter esse número, divida o tamanho da parede pela largura do
grupo.
Por favor, lembre-se de adicionar 2-4 polegadas (5 -10 cm) à largura ao
calcular isso. Caso contrário, não haverá espaço para os grupos respirarem.
Passo 4– Divida o comprimento da parede com o número total
de grupos. Você obterá um tamanho (digamos X), que será o máximo de espaço
disponível para cada grupo individualmente.
Passo 5 - Descubra os pontos de referência para cada grupo.
Para obter isto, use a mesma fórmula simples Y = X (n-0.5), onde “X” é o valor
que calculamos no passo anterior. “N” é o número do grupo (nth group) e “Y” é a
distância da extremidade esquerda da parede.
Passo 6 - Aqui, marcaremos os pontos centrais de cada grupo.
Você tem que medir 60 cm (152 cm) do piso da escada através de cada ponto de
referência para obter esses pontos. Em seguida, pendure cada grupo nesses
pontos centrais.
É isso aí..!!! Eu sei que são
muitos passos, mas se você segui-los um a um, você vai obter uma parede
escadaria lindamente decorada e que ninguém resistiria !! (Aqui).
Entretanto, se o seu caso não se enquadra em nenhum dos tópicos
anteriores, ou seja, você é uma pessoa que tem quadro e/ou fotos em grande
quantidade, e em tamanhos diferentes, poderá seguir esta outra maneira de
organizar sua galeria:
4 – Modelo Pessoal:
Etapa 1 - Inicialmente, selecione os quadros e as fotos que
deseja pendurar.
Com uma trena meça o espaço da parede onde deseja organizar seus quadros
e fotos. O ponto mais alto dos quadros pendurados deve ser cerca de 15 a 30 cm
(6 – 12”) acima do nível médio dos olhos em cada degrau (± 1,60 m ou 630”).
Isso significa que o ponto mais alto dos quadros será uma linha diagonal
paralela à escada, aumentando à medida que você sobe os degraus. O ponto mais
baixo dos quadros deve ser 15 a 30 cm (6 – 12”) abaixo do nível médio dos olhos
em cada degrau. Isto significa que o ponto mais baixo da superfície será uma
linha diagonal paralela à linha superior ---- o espaço entre as duas linhas
formará um retângulo com cerca de 45 a 60 cm (17 – 24”) de largura.
Uma outra forma, seria determinar uma altura de cerca de ± 125 cm (47'')
para posicionar o quadro mais baixo e repetir o processo nos demais degraus. No
sentido vertical, opte por um espaçamento de cerca de 8 a 15 cm (3 a 6'') (aqui).
Etapa 2 – Crie um espaço semelhante no chão, esticando dois
pedaços de fio ou corda para representar as linhas superior e inferior da
parede da escada (reproduzindo o retângulo da parede). Coloque os quadros no
chão entre as duas linhas e experimente diferentes arranjos. Misture e combine
os quadros mantendo cerca de 8 a 15 cm (8 a 6”) de espaço entre eles. Se
desejar, você poderá recortar cartolinas com as mesmas dimensões dos quadros e
fixa-las na parede e montar a sua composição. Faça diferentes composições e
escolha a que mais lhe agrada (aqui).
Etapa 3 –
Transfira o primeiro quadro para a parede, começando pelo centro e perto
do ponto mais alto da parede. Pendure o quadro. Adicione quadros para a
esquerda, direita e abaixo do primeiro quadro até ter preenchido toda a parede
com os quadros e as fotos. Afaste-se e confira tudo para ter certeza de que o
resultado lhe agradou.
Quadros finalmente colocados. Efeito final, simples, harmonioso e elegante.
